The Evolution of the GeoSuite System


The GeoSuite V1.0

The original GeoSuite System was developed as part of a research study to determine the effectiveness of electro-seismic technologies in groundwater studies within sedimentary geologies. The GeoSuite v1.0 included a 1kHz AD converter with digital gain control as well as wireless communication between the acquisition unit and the computer. A hardware trigger system was used to determine when a seismic event occurred. Although the system produced reasonable results for the study, it needed a lot of improvements.

The GeoSuite V2.0

The first evolution of the GeoSuite system included an upgrade to an 8kHz AD converter and higher speed Bluetooth communications between the acquisition unit and the computer. A hardware trigger was still used in this model, which caused significant delays in field acquisitions due to failures in the cable that connected the hammer to the trigger. This version showed significant improvements in data resolution, but still needed improvement.

To improve on the disadvantages of a hardware triggering system, a software trigger was developed. This effectively all the hardware problems we had in the field but one, namely, laptop failure. The software trigger had the added advantage of making the GeoSuite system independent of the seismic source used. Any impulse type seismic source could now be used to collect electro-seismic data. Another major upgrade was in the AD converter system used. This version used the audio card on the laptop to to record the electro-seismic data. This resulted in significant improvements in data resolution and quality and made the system easier to use. Problem was that the laptops used tended to overheat and fail in the heat of the field.

In order to remove the laptops from the field, this version of the GeoSuite system used an of the shelf voice recorder to collect data. The GeoSuite software was adapted to import audio file data for processing and in so doing made the system easy to deploy anywhere in the world. Consultants only had to purchase the recording device to collect data anywhere and send the data via email for processing. This was an incredibly powerful development and allowed us to build relations with consultant globally. Problem was that even though the data was easy to obtain, it could not be immediately processed in the field. This present problems in ascertaining the data quality while a survey was being conducted. This problem need to be addressed.

GeoSuite System V5.0

Enter the current version of the GeoSuite System, the ATS GeoSuite App. This version of the GeoSuite system address all the problems experience with the previous systems. The App based system is a software solution that uses a mobile devices hardware to function. The app collects, analysis, processes and visualizes data immediately in the field. It is a complete and comprehensive system targeted at groundwater exploration. This version truly provides everything a user need to conduct a geophysical survey and then some. With resistivity and magnetic survey capabilities added in, it has become a truly powerful set of geophysical tools in one easy-to-use, portable system.
